In her latest series of paintings and drawings titled Delft’s Blue, Van Der Meule reconnects with her native land, the Netherlands, by recalling images from traditional Dutch tile and ceramic work and weaving them with geometric shapes to create a seeming hybrid of mediums; textile and tile work. Patterns, like geometric shapes, resonate with a sense of familiarity. They are those things in life that persist and reappear, things that are worthy of imitation and interpretation. In all her work, Loura Van Der Meule demonstrates her inexhaustible ability in melding the universal and the traditional with invigorating talent.
Loura Van Der Meule currently lives and works in Jersey City, New Jersey. She studied at the Academy of Visual Arts in Breda and the School for Design and Décor in Utrecht, and came to New York in 1983 on a grant from The Dutch Ministry of Culture Affairs. Her work has been exhibited in museums and galleries in the New York area, and has been collected by museums, corporations and private collections in the Netherlands and the U.S.
