I was always excited about patterns in fabrics, carpets and ceramics of foreign cultures and used them as an inspiration for my work.
At a certain point I became disconnected from my work and went on a quest to find a deeper and more personal relation with my work.
Through a picture of my grandmother, dressed in a traditional costume of Zeeland, a Province in the Netherlands, where I grew up, I reconnected with my own culture.
The patterns and textures in the traditional costumes became a new inspiration for my oil pastel drawings.
While I grew up there, I did not see how rich and unique my own culture was.
This new way of looking evokes in me a warm and an uplifting feeling which leads to a continuous new burst of creativity.
